Why would a business want to spend hundreds or thousands of pounds on new PCs for their employee’s?

While the PC you’ve had for a few years may still serve its purpose, is it truly as efficient as it could be?

If your current business PC is three years or older, there's a strong likelihood that it’s not performing as well as it did when it was new. As your business expands, you’re likely running more programs, opening multiple internet tabs, and perhaps even using multiple screens. If you’re not already using dual monitors, I highly recommend giving it a try—most people find it hard to go back to a single monitor once they've experienced the productivity boost of multiple displays.

I’ve observed multi-million-pound companies operating with PCs that are well past their prime, featuring CPUs over ten years old and only 4GB of RAM, along with mechanical hard drives. Unless you're merely handling basic spreadsheet and email tasks, 4GB of RAM simply isn’t sufficient anymore. Additionally, booting from a mechanical hard drive can be painfully slow, leading to frustration, especially if a reboot is needed during the workday.

Why you should invest in new PC's
 

Let's assume that you are a relatively small business with a couple of office PC's that are a few years old that you got cheap, running an early Intel core i3-2120 CPU, 4 GB of RAM, 500GB mechanical hard drive (I have witnessed this exact setup with a multi-million-pound company with over 1500 employees across multiple sites in the UK), this particular PC would take around 3 - 4 minutes to power up, the user required at least 6 internet tabs open, email open, Microsoft Excel and a couple of work specific apps also open, this pretty much put the memory usage at 90% and was relying on the windows swap file, this, in turn, meant that every time he clicked on a link on one of the webpages, it would take on average 7 - 10 seconds to load the next page, this could be a requirement hundreds of times a day on busy days, essentially wasting many minutes throughout the day and causing frustration, switching between apps would also have the same results.

A new PC with a modern 6 core CPU, 16GB of RAM & 1TB SSD costs around £500 which may seem a large investment, however if you consider that the PC now starts in around ten seconds, opening links are now pretty much instant, as is switching between tabs, also a much less frustrated employee, being far more productive and making more money for the company, the investment will pay for itself within a few months in this instance, it will also lead to increased profits for the company, can you really not afford to purchase a new PC?

Not every business PC will require a six core CPU and 16GB of RAM, but an SSD is essential, fortunately SSDs are no longer expensive, normally a 500GB SSD is around the price of a 1TB hard drive, from my experience, most businesses don't even need 500GB of storage on a PC. A modern Quad core with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD can be built for around £400 and would still be a night and day difference against an older PC.

While the big companies do business-specific machines, they are often made with proprietary parts, meaning that should anything go wrong, particularly outside of warranty, then you are looking at increased costs for replacements, also upgrading the PC is very limited and near impossible with some.
